7 Ways to Lower Stress Around Money

Money is a touchy subject. It can be stressful and anxiety-inducing, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are many ways to lower stress around money – you just need to know what they are! In this article, we will share 7 of the best methods for managing your financial stress in a healthy way so you can enjoy life more often without worrying about how much you spend or owe.

We all have different reasons for stressing about money. Perhaps it’s because we don’t make enough to support our expenses and live a comfortable life. Or maybe we’re scared of the future, or are worried about whether or not someone is spending our money wisely. No matter what you’re struggling with in your finances, it does not need to stay this way.

With a little bit of time and attention, you can find relief from stress around money.

Here are some ways to get started:

# 1 – Zoom out – see the larger picture. This will help put things in perspective so that your fears aren’t as scary or overwhelming. Think about your life. Even though it may seem like you are in a tough spot, you are alive, you have a place to sleep and food to eat. That’s a lot of good things. And even if if feels stressful now, it does not need to stay that way.

# 2 – Talk with someone about whatever is stressing you: Whether it be your spouse, friend or therapist, talking through our problems can make them seem less scary and overwhelming. You don’t have to do this alone. This is such an important topic and I will share some more tips on how to talk with people about money stress in another article. I personally believe that much of our stress about money is that it is taboo to talk about it, and therefor we let things spin in our head.

#3 – Gratitude: Think of three things you are grateful for in your life. One way to lower stress around money is to take a break and be thankful for all the good things that have happened or will happen. Write down these three items from this list: your health, loved ones who support you, cool experiences and what ever comes to mind. There are studies that show that writing down what we are grateful for can increase our happiness. It will also help lower your stress. This is such a simple one, and you can do it now….take a piece of paper (or on your phone) and write three things you are grateful for.

#4 – Choose to think of the world in a positive way. When we are stressed, it’s easy for our mindset to get dark and depressing. But there is evidence that suggests when we focus on being optimistic, not only will our mood improve but also performance improves too. Try this: make a list of all the things you like about your life (this can be anything from food or exercise to friends or traveling). Make sure your list has at least five items on it before you start counting! Once completed, read over the list everyday until you notice yourself feeling better about your financial situation.

#5 Meditate or practice yoga. This will help lower overall stress and get you into a relaxed state. There are many great guided meditations and yoga classes on youtube, or I have some here on this site as well. And not only will yoga help you lower your stress around money, it will help lower stress for any reason. And it will help you feel happier and healthier in general.

# 6 Do something you love that involves moving the body – get some exercise – you will see the world differently afterwards. Exercise is one of the fastest way to change our state of being. I love exercising if I feel stressed because I feel differently afterward and I feel better and am able to focus and actually take action to improve my financial situation instead of just feeling frozen in a state of stress. I am sure you know what I mean…so the next time you are feeling stressed about money and are not able to take action, go do you favorite physical activity. Dance, go for a walk, do some bur-pies, anything you love that involves moving should work.

# 7 Take Action. Stop procrastinating and start taking action, no matter how small. Open a savings account, ask for a raise, create a budget, make a vision board, talk with a knowledgable friend, file your taxes, pay the bill, or whatever else is on your financial to do list. Once you start taking action, the rest will follow.

By Zooming Out, you can see that while some things may seem bad in the moment they will soon pass and there is always a brighter side to life. And it’s true – by taking action we have started our financial comeback! The key now is to know that you are not alone and there there are things you can do to lower your stress around money.

Above all, know that you are in control of your own financial decisions, and the stress you feel around it. And if you are in a situation where you feel out-of-control financially, talk to someone about it and ask for help. They might be able to offer suggestions or assistance that will make things better.

I hope these tips can help lower stress around money!
